Dear Ron,
Ron Foreman

It takes courage to be an entrepreneur, and long hours, hard work, and a willingness to take a financial risk. When you eventually have enough clients to pay your bills, and there's something left over for you, it's worth all the effort.

Here are some technology tips to attract new clients and reduce costs, two of the most important things every entrepreneur must do.

Purchase additional domains to attract new business!
If your company name is ABC Human Resources Consulting and your market is primarily in Toronto, consider buying the domain humanresourcesconsultantintoronto.com. It's likely to be available and will be one of the first organic results Google will offer for the search term: "a human resources consultant in toronto."

You can purchase domains names for under $10 and point as many as you like to your website.
Always use your own email address to send email!
Always use your own email account when sending email, not your Rogers, Sympatico, Cogeco, or whatever address. The recipient sees this first in their Inbox and it promotes your company and your website. Why promote Rogers when you can promote yourself?

It's easy to setup your mail program to receive email from multiple email addresses, but to send from only one, your own domain address.
Free Google Docs & Spreadsheet Software
Most businesses need a word processor and spreadsheet program for communicating and budgeting. MS-Office is expensive. Try Google Docs & Spreadsheets. It's free and available from every computer connected to the Internet.

Google Docs & Spreadsheets is a web-based word processing and spreadsheet program that keeps documents current and lets the people you choose update files from their own computers. Work on them alone or collaborate with remote colleagues.
Free Accounting Software
Microsoft's Office Accounting Express 2007 is tailored to small business. It can handle invoicing, payroll, and profit & loss reporting. It also includes easy access to eBay, PayPal and credit card processing services.

Office Accounting Express 2007 is compatible with other Office programs. For example, allows you to customize forms such as invoices using Word. It can sync with contact information in Outlook. It can also work with data from QuickBooks, Money, Excel or Access. Best of all, Office Accounting Express 2007 is free.
Don't risk losing your corner of the web by letting it expire. When you accidentally let your domain name expire, a drop catcher swoops in, buying the name to resell it or use it for a website loaded with advertisements.

Tips to maintain ownership of your domain:
1. Keep your contact information up-to-date. Registrars will advise you well in advance that you need to renew. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date so they can contact you.
2. Don't use a free e-mail account when you register a domain. If you don't access a free e-mail account for 30 days, it may be deleted. You won't receive renewal notification from your registrar.
3. Take advantage of auto renew. Most registrars offer this service, which allows registrants who buy a domain name for a year to auto renew it with a credit card. Make sure your payment information is current.
4. Register your domain name for more than one year. In most cases, your costs will go down if you register your domain name for multiple years.
