The first website went on-line in 1991. It looked like this. On April 30, 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to anyone.

According to a 2001 study, there were more than 550 billion documents on the Web. A 2002 survey of 2,024 million web pages determined that 56.4% were in English, 7.7% in German, 5.6% in French and 4.9% in Japanese.
